Our client, Purified Metal Company, developed the innovative technology which solves a long-term environmental problem and health hazard. Currently many thousands of tonnes of steel contaminated with asbestos, and other hazardous components like chromium 6, mercury or pcb’s, are dumped into landfill in the Netherlands every year. Once the plant in Delfzijl is up and running it will be possible to recycle the steel and safely destroy the asbestos and other hazardous components without the need to clean the steel in advance.

Further plants are anticipated to address what is a global issue. Steel coated with all kinds of hazardous contaminations is available all over Europe and other western countries.

Architectural and structural design incorporate rigorous safety features

Royal HaskoningDHV carried out the architectural and structural design for the plant and has successfully obtained the necessary building and environmental permits. Furthermore, we were able to advice on multiple disciplines including fire safety and civil engineering. Due to the asbestos, the structure incorporates rigorous safety measures. It has been designed to withstand earthquakes and includes measures to create permanent containment areas with subatmosferic pressure and air-lock systems.

‘’Our solution meant that contaminated steel could safely be delivered, stored and recycled.’’ explained Mark Zey, project manager and senior architectural consultant.
We had to factor in the contaminated nature of the product in choice of material, design and detailing to deliver a fit-for-purpose facility.

The new facility was officially opened by the Dutch King Willem-Alexander on September 17th, 2020.

Henk-Jan Wijma, CEO of PMC, added the following: ‘’Royal Haskoning DHV has been advising PMC from the early start of the project up till today. The new technology of Purified Metal Company creates all kinds of complex legal, environmental and technical questions. Royal HaskoningDHV has been a strong partner in guiding PMC in that process. The strong and credible Royal HaskoningDHV brand helped to reach financial close in the project.”
