The role

As a Building Service Engineering Design Technician Apprentice you are a part of Engineering UK mechanical and electrical building engineering services design team interacting with design engineers and engineering technicians across discipline based teams and with project managers.


Overall purpose of the role

Your overall role will be to establish a good foundation in building services engineering design through study and workplace experience. You will prepare data rich building engineering systems design models including 2D output. In undertaking the duties you will be required to aid implementing our smarter digital ways of working to help merge design and modelling activities by exploiting automated parametric design opportunities.

The role will require the ability to undertake computer based simulation and analysis, data handling and three-dimensional geometric modelling using proprietary software and company specific processes whilst being a pro-active member of the engineering team. 


General responsibilities

  • Working in a data rich design environment using proprietary software such as Autodesk Revit, IES Virtual Environment, Amtech Pro-Design and Python scripting
  • Production of mechanical and electrical building engineering analysis, data and geometric models.
  • Implementation of the companies quality assurance and model design process procedures.
  • Tracking of personal development and workload delivery progress through iterative feedback.
  • Interaction with specialist design and consultation colleagues to expand knowledge and provide a hands-on cross-discipline approach to data and model management

  • Contribute in a pro-active manner to cultural change in transition of design and modelling approach to embrace smarter digital ways of working
  • Bring new practices and approach from the learning environment into the workplace
  • Aid in research, development and implementation of new software, visualisation tools and data handling techniques



  • Computer literate with an interest in exploiting automation, parametric modelling, data handling and visualisation within a modern design office environment.
  • A clear appetite to learn a range of built environment digital skills, particularly building engineering systems design, from a diverse spectrum of specialists in a global business.
  • Excellent inter-personal communication skills as required to reinforce cultural change.


Qualifications & experience

  • GCSE grade 4 minimum in mathematics and English.
  • Working towards applicable BTEC Level 3 accreditation in Building Services Design
