Internship Digital Twin: Semantic Modelling
Our world
is changing, quickly. Rapid innovation and widescale digital transformation are
producing new challenges for organizations in every sector. But along with
these challenges come new opportunities. Digital twins have the potential to
radically transform the way we think and operate as a society, providing the
insight and agility needed to turn reactive decision-making into proactive
problem-solving. Driven by relevant data, a digital twin is a virtual mirror of
a real-world asset, process or even an entire system, like a supply chain or
city. This mirror provides insight into how that asset behaves under a variety
of simulated conditions, helping you to improve decision-making and optimize
business processes.
Data
interoperability is vital between the various technologies in a digital twin
ecosystem. Differing open and proprietary standards and exchange formats will
require careful consideration to ensure success. Clear interoperability
standards will help twins exchange data and models, and enable a growing,
healthy ecosystem. To make different Asset Management, GIS, and BIM-data
interoperable, we want to build a Digital Twin ontology: a framework to
describe the interconnectivities between asset data and metadata in a shareable
and reusable format. This ontology provides a step on the journey to making
data seamlessly available when and where it is needed across data management
systems and supports the first steps in the transition from traditional Asset
Management to operation via the Digital Twin.
The
Digital Twin ontology will be built using “Linked Data” and “Semantic Web”
technologies. The Semantic Web helps link datasets so that they are
understandable not only to humans but also to machines, and “Linked Data” makes
these links possible. In other words, Linked Data is a set of design principles
for sharing machine-readable interlinked data on the Web. This enables humans
to clearly understand the semantics of the different data standards, while
machines can be used to automate the processes. For example, we can integrate
sensor data with BIM data within a Digital Tunnel Twin to automatically link
and visualize condition data of assets in a GIS environment.
What you will do
As an Intern, you will build a semantic model of a Digital Twin by researching and combining existing standards. The model needs to be modular and applicable in different domains. We want you to classify and integrate data according to the Digital Twin model and visualize the asset and sensor data in BIM or GIS software. You will work with data that is available from existing projects and you will be working on a way to automate the linking workflow. This is a nice opportunity to become familiar the projects we are working on at Royal HaskoningDHV and we’ll challenge you to contribute by applying the knowledge gained during your research.
Where you will work
As an Intern Digital Twin Data Integration, you will join our Data Solutions team. A leading group of experts with the main focus on using data to optimize and adapt the physical environment. You will work partly at home and partly at the Royal HaskoningDHV offices in Amersfoort or Nijmegen.
What you bring
We are looking for a motivated intern student that matches the following profile:
