Project Controller
There is an exciting opportunity for a Project Controller to join the Finance Corporate Group in the Johannesburg office of Royal HaskoningDHV.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the Business Unit Controller in delivering both regular and limited ad-hoc reporting and analyses for senior management of both the Business Unit and the group.
  • Cultivate effective partnerships with all relevant business customers (project managers, Director Advisory Group (DAG’s), and other stakeholders).
  • Challenge the proposal manager on financial and risk related topics (like strategic fit, risk/reward balance, pricing, invoicing, cash flow, (international) tax, currency risks, pre-financing) during the PQ & Proposal phase of non-routine tenders. (does this fit with D2W from a system perspective? DF)
  • Use standard Health Check (“HC”) project information, looking backwards and more often forward, and provide analysis for decision making and project performance improvement purposes, using data analytics opportunities.
  • As a business partner of Tier A – D Basic Process project teams, pro-actively signal areas of improvement. Challenge project managers on non-resolved financial and other issues impacting or potentially impacting project financial results.
  • Discuss identified areas of improvement with project managers and flag potential areas of concern that project managers need to communicate to line management in their HC Full & Lite reports. Validate HC Full & Lite reports before it is certified by the project manager.
  • Participate in monthly HC Lite & Basic review meetings with DAG’s/project managers. Fully support project managers to achieve high quality and timely financial information in the HC Lite & Basic reports for the monthly review meetings.
  • Quickly identify financial issues/risks during a desk review of the HC Basic reports to focus on exceptions in review meetings.
  • Identify improvement opportunities in all business processes and pro-actively contribute to value-add process changes.
  • Pro-actively share finance and management control knowledge with project, finance, and line managers.
  • Coach project finance administrative team members.
  • Carry out any duties which Finance line managers may reasonably request within the broad parameters of the role.
  • Perform work mostly independent and determine own priorities without continuously being monitored by a direct manager. Review of work is done indirectly and mainly on achieved results

Minimum qualifications, skills and experience:

         Qualifications

  • Relevant Master Economics/Management accounting degree (preferred on academic level). Thorough understanding of the finance & management control discipline and underlying principles: capability to apply these in daily practice. Basic knowledge of related disciplines (like data analytics, IT and risk management).
  • Desirable
  • Previous exposure to international project operations (foreign currency transactions, international tax requirements etc.).
  • Previous experience in a similar role in the Engineering/Construction industry

         Skills and Experience

  • 5 - 8 years of relevant experience or, in case of a graduate, show steady growth in skill development.
  • Interpretation and tactical application of policies, choosing the right ones given differing situations, to come to optimal solutions for Business needs, based on excellent understanding of the business of RHDHV.
  • Strong business partner and commercial awareness. Excellent communication and influencing skills. Provides advice to the business and is able to explain and convince internal parties about chosen solution based on content-driven arguments. Speaks the language of the business
  • Strong analytical and forward-looking skills. Capable of assessing the impact of all relevant project issues on the financial result (cash flow and profit), has a holistic view and as such understands the key drivers behind a profitable project.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Good verbal & written communication skills.
