Tunnels & Underground Structures

Tunnels and underground structures are a vital part of our infrastructure, hidden from view but providing a significant impact on reducing problems of space and improving the quality of life at ground level. Royal HaskoningDHV has the capability to offer support during the initial planning phase, the actual delivery and maintenance of these structures. Through an integral approach, we are able to develop durable, efficient and safe structures. Royal HaskoningDHV are members of the Tunnel Engineering Consultants (TEC) joint venture, and participates in the Netherlands Centre for Underground Construction.

Saving energy in road tunnels

With the Paris agreement, participating countries have expressed their ambition to limit the temperature increase of the globe to two degrees centigrade and, if possible, lower this limit to one-and-a-half degrees centigrade. In order to achieve this goal, our traffic infrastructure should become more sustainable by reducing the energy intake and using more sustainable energy sources. We have developed and researched the idea of using transparent PV-panels in daylight screens, which can yield an 80% energy reduction for the lighting of the entry zone, and thus 20% overall energy savings.
