About Tatu Nereda® WWTP – Brazil
Tatu is situated to the southeast of the city of Limeira. It is in the eastern part of the Brazilian state of São Paulo, 154 km from the state capital.
The challenge
Due to increased population and the introduction of more stringent legislation, the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Tatu near Limeira needed to be extended in order to secure water quality of the nearby River Tatu. The wastewater treatment plant at Limeira serves a population equivalent of 232,850. The plant endured frequent flooding, due to high water levels in the River Tatu. There was also the possible highly toxic concentrations of heavy metals in the water due to local metallurgic companies operating in the area.

The solution
Main contractor BRK Ambiental employed Nereda technology on the site, as part of the major upgrade to the facility. As a way of mitigating against the flooding of the plant, the site equipment and instruments had to be installed in a secure place. The existing wastewater treatment plant has been upgraded with biological treatment, using Nereda technology, with pre-treatment 3 mm screens and efficient O&G removal installed. The three Nereda reactors are downstream of the existing primary clarifier. Because of differences in height, the reactors are fed by gravity flow, which results in efficient energy consumption.
The outcome
In addition to delivering an extended basic design and a Nereda Controller, Royal HaskoningDHV reviewed the client’s detailed design and supported the client with commissioning, start-up and five years of operation of the new plant. BRK operates the plant and the facility’s cost-efficiency – CAPEX as well as OPEX – is a very important feature.
