First Nereda package plant wins UK Water Industry Award Wastewater Innovation project of the year

World's first Nereda package plant

The award was for the world’s first Nereda® Package Plant, which has been successfully installed at United Utilities wastewater treatment site at Westnewton, making it the water company’s smallest Nereda wastewater treatment plant. United Utilities worked collaboratively with C2V + as principal contractor, Royal HaskoningDHV and Suprafilt to develop the detailed design for Westnewton Wastewater Treatment Plant. Royal HaskoningDHV was the technology expert, working with Suprafilt as the MEICA delivery partner, who provided turnkey factory-build, transportation to site, construction and assembly, and process start-up.

With innovation high on the water industry’s agenda, the ‘Wastewater Innovation Project’ category was looking for submissions that demonstrated new approaches, technologies and ways of working that will help the sector meet the challenges not only of today, but also tomorrow. The category judges were looking to reward the best wastewater project involving technical, process or management innovation.

Meeting future challenges

Nereda Package Plants have been designed to focus on biological phosphorus removal, achieving TP consents, with little or no chemical dosing. The design, size and effectiveness of the Nereda Package Plant is a considerable step forward for high-quality, sustainable wastewater treatment at small works. The plants are designed to be efficient, resilient and flexible, and are easily extendable to keep pace with future challenges such as population growth or tighter future permit standards.
