On March 20, 2019, Michiel Eielts, Managing Director of Equinix Benelux, was presented with a LEED Gold certificate for his company’s massive AM4 data centre at the Amsterdam Science Park. "We are proud of the LEED Gold certificate. A very successful collaboration with Royal HaskoningDHV," he said. “We are continuously working on innovation to improve data centre efficiency and reduce energy consumption to benefit our partners, customers and the environment." Equinix builds data centres to the most stringent industry standards as proof of the company’s commitment to upholding the highest international standards of sustainability, not just in the operational efficiency of the data centre but also during design, build and management.

We congratulate Equinix in realising their ambition to achieve LEED Gold certification and are proud to have played a pivotal role in this achievement, which drew together our expertise in green buildings, sustainable energy systems and data centre design.

Royal HaskoningDHV was responsible for conceptual design, project management and building supervision for AM4 while also ensuring that the requirements for LEED Gold were met. Features that led to the gold certification include water and energy efficiency, reduced water usage, innovative design and high-quality indoor environment. It operates in-ground energy storage instead of mechanical cooling which results in significant energy savings and reduced CO2 footprint. This setup also allows waste heat exchange with the nearby university buildings.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is one of the most prestigious globally-recognised symbols of sustainability achievement.
