Groningen's new station will be a multi-modal hub, bringing together many forms of public and private transport in an attractive and comfortable building. The sustainable and green design also integrates the monumental qualities of the building. Additionally, the station connects the inner city of Groningen with the south side of Groningen, creating new opportunities for urban development.

The preparatory work will start in the first half of 2020, such as relocating the retail shops and removing the roads on the current parking lot on the south side of the station. As soon as more space is created, the construction of the pedestrian passageway, the bicycle tunnel, the bicycle parking, platforms, the underpass for the bus and the bus station will start. The renovation of the station is expected to be completed in 2023.

Royal HaskoningDHV has been involved from the tender phase on and will be providing all design and engineering services until project completion. Our scope includes structural design, geotechnical design, MEP design, rail and infrastructure design as well as design management services.

The modifications to the station are part of a cooperation project between ProRail, the province of Groningen, the city of Groningen and the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
