All business lines contributed to the organisation’s strong performance, with one exception. Due to the challenging market situation in South Africa our business in Southern Africa declined and is being restructured. This negatively impacted the net result by €11 million.”

The Paris Agreement and country-specific targets to combat climate change urge society to reduce CO2 emissions and move away from fossil fuels. The energy transition is paramount in all parts of the built environment. In 2019, Royal HaskoningDHV saw its energy transition-related offerings double compared to the previous year.
To deliver its clients smarter solutions in a shorter timescale, Royal HaskoningDHV is transforming its operations by introducing additional digital tools and ways of working. The focus is on standardising information management, automating repetitive tasks and the use of digital tooling such as parametric design, augmented and virtual reality.
A good example is the design of the new Feyenoord football stadium in the Netherlands. By adopting a parametric way of working, Royal HaskoningDHV was able to manage the complexity, meet stakeholder requirements, offer a fantastic sightline from every seat and explore multiple iterations quickly to deliver the perfect structure.
Developing innovations to accelerate digital tools and applying these to provide better advice and value remains a priority for all. Currently there are over 100 initiatives in the company’s innovation funnel, of which roughly 40% are digital tools and digital way of working innovations.
Royal HaskoningDHV is nurturing an attractive environment to support the personal growth and development of employees. This is reflected in the 2019 employee satisfaction score of 80% (2016: 71%). The company continues to develop its Digital Academy to build employees’ digital skills alongside their strong domain knowledge. In 2019 over 1,200 colleagues participated in one or more Digital Academy courses and the company launched digital talent programmes and traineeships.

CEO, Erik Oostwegel on the COVID-19 virus outbreak: “Operating globally, we closely monitor the developments around the coronavirus. To safeguard the health of our employees and clients, we follow the advice from the World Health Organisation and country specific health organisations. We’ve also considerably limited travel, meet online now and work from home where necessary and possible. To date, the virus outbreak has limited impact on our business. We do however expect more impact as some of our clients face increasing difficulties in their supply chain or other limitations in their operations.”
Royal HaskoningDHV project highlight 2019
- A sandscaping solution designed by Royal HaskoningDHV is protecting the Bacton gas terminal and adjacent villages in Norfolk, United Kingdom, from flooding and erosion.
- Royal HaskoningDHV’s Nereda team won a Global Water Award for Wastewater Project of the Year with its technology at the sewage treatment installation in Utrecht, the Netherlands, delivering high quality effluent at low cost.
- Royal HaskoningDHV, CEAD and DSM designed the first lightweight 3D printed FRP pedestrian bridge prototype using a composite material offering high strength with extreme versatility and sustainability.
- For the Regional Energy Strategy West-Brabant in the Netherlands, Royal HaskoningDHV is working together with 16 municipalities, the local water authority, the province and the energy network operator to cut CO2 emissions by 49% in 2030.
- At North Sea Port that stretches from Vlissingen in the Netherlands to Ghent in Belgium, Royal HaskoningDHV was involved in a study to cut industrial CO2 emissions and support the transition to a circular economy.
- The United Kingdom team is supporting four major renewable energy projects through the country’s rigorous EIA and consenting process; Norfolk Boreas, Norfolk Vanguard, East Anglia One North and East Anglia Two would represent up to 5GW of new renewable energy generating capacity – over 5% of the United Kingdom total.
- NACO is proud to have played a part in the design for O’Hare’s new Global Terminal, aiming to recapture the romance associated with air travel while reflecting Chicago’s cultural diversity.
- The world’s largest bicycle parking facility in Utrecht, the Netherlands, was officially opened. Royal HaskoningDHV was responsible for the integrated design of the concrete support structure and all installations. It also advised on the most efficient and safe cycle routes.
- A state-of-the-art Dry Dock commenced operations in Mumbai, India. The concept design of the dock and project management was undertaken by Royal HaskoningDHV.
- The Flood Forecasting and Warning System for Metro-Manila, home to some 12 million people is being upgraded. H2i and Royal HaskoningDHV will provide the Department of Public Works and Highways with recommendations on the upgrade of the existing warning systems by the integration of real-time weather information, the development of data-driven hydrological models and improved information to the users.
- For Washington River Protection Solutions, Lanner and Ynformed are developing an AI based solution using simulations to expedite the safe clean-up of nuclear waste.
- In South Africa, Royal HaskoningDHV successfully worked on a coordinated strategy for KwaZulu-Natal’s economically important Durban Aerotropolis, a special economic zone expected to create 750,000 jobs.
