Consultancy for Asian Development Bank in adopting BIM for new railways projects

Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s developing member countries (DMC) in the Asia-Pacific region have huge and ambitious investment plans to build, extend and revive their national railways. The focus includes interconnecting national railways as well as building and extending urban railway systems.

ADB recognizes the significant benefits of adopting Building Information Management (BIM) solutions within these projects, from delivery right through to operation. The advantages include:

  1. Preserving major railway investments over their intended life-cycle;
  2. Reducing the total cost of ownership for national railways and/or public-transport authorities;
  3. Efficiently operating these railway systems to maximize revenues; to shift traffic from road to rail, and to make them the transport mode of choice for passengers and industry.

The objective of Royal HaskoningDHV’s involvement is to introduce and promote efficient BIM solutions for ADB’s railway projects. These include infrastructure developments, railway system implementations, strategies and sustainable railway operation and maintenance schemes. BIM will enable ADB’s member countries to achieve its business objectives in a sustainable and cost efficient way from the delivery phase through to ongoing operation.

Within its consultancy role, Royal HaskoningDHV will map international standards to national and regional requirements and evaluate implementation guidelines and data principles across each project.

A comprehensive survey of enterprise BIM software and BIM asset management software will be evaluated and checked against the agreed standards. This research will inform a deployment strategy to enable the client to steer BIM implementation in the Asia-Pacific region.
