The panels were dislodged during a storm and fell into the car park below. We were contacted by our client to make an immediate assessment of the integrity of the façade and analyse why it had happened.
Report addresses safety and includes detailed structural assessment
An expert from our Advanced Technology & Research Centre was on site within 24 hours for a visual assessment of the façade and supporting structure, taking photographs and measurements. After quick action to determine the immediate safety, an in-depth structural assessment explored the reasons behind the failure of the façade in what was a relatively young building.
The assessment included an analysis of the original building plans supplied by our client. These showed that the design calculations were based on inadequate wind speeds. In addition, stronger winds experienced at the buildings’ edges had not been taken into account. These created potential loads which exceeded the design loads by as much as 100%. We provided advice and recommendations for the short-term as well as suggestions for stabilising the façade in the longer term.
