Growing population in the metropolitan area along with the increasing demand for sustainable transport has resulted in rail being a mode of choice for many in the area. To help meet this burgeoning demand, Royal HaskoningDHV has been commissioned by ProRail to embark on engineering works to expand rail capacity, improve network performance and ultimately enhance the passenger experience.
The aim is to run eight Intercity trains (including high speed) and six Sprinter trains per hour in each direction between the two stations. At the same time, the municipality of Delft had plans to develop a rail tunnel to enable construction of new real estate to take place in the city centre.
Bringing rail strategy to lifeTo accommodate the exponential increase in rail capacity between Rijswijk and Rotterdam, the decision was made to expand the two-track rail link into a four-track link, creating a tunnel and a subterranean railway station at Delft. Planning and engineering concern both the above ground infrastructure and the tunnel including associated track infrastructure along with the design & engineering of the railway stations at Delft (a public transport hub with subterranean rail tracks) and Delft Campus.
Design, engineer, deliverThe project is being developed in two major stages. The first stage was delivered in 2015 and included the build of the railway station and tunnel construction of Delft. For the second stage, the four-track rail link between Rijswijk and Rotterdam has been planned and will be delivered in 2024.
Royal HaskoningDHV worked across the rail ecosystem to design, engineer and deliver:
- Calculations of railway capacity, train paths and frequencies using Open Track software
- Design of track, embedment, structures, catenary and signalling systems
- Functional and structural design of the tunnel and the subterranean station of Delft, including the tunnel technical systems
- Integration with planned urban development (council offices, homes, offices)
- Environmental impact assessment and legal planning process and documents
- Specific studies concerning tunnel safety, wind speeds and air pressure in the subterranean station, noise and vibrations
- Preparation of tender documentation and supervision of the tenders
Thanks to our integrated approach, we are in the process of improving network performance and deliver a reliable, safe and more comfortable rail passenger experience for the people of Rijswijk, Rotterdam and Delft.
