The design for a building to house utilities at Aruba Airport in the Caribbean was completed in just three months. This helped speeding up the progress for the extension of the passenger terminal. By housing utilities in a separate building, it was possible to keep the terminal in operation during the extension.
Understanding market requirements helped speed progress
We worked closely with our aviation specialists from NACO who were responsible for the terminal extension. In-depth market knowledge meant we understood what was important for our client, such as the need to keep operations running, as well as specific security arrangements. The new utility building was on the landside/airside boundary.
A smart architectural design increased flexibility and resulted in an elegant addition to the site. Large internal spans characterised the interior, made possible by placing all supporting columns for the long flat building outside. Each utility had specific requirements, so the open layout enabled internal plans to be updated and finalised without slowing down progress on the overall structure.
The columns also ensured that what is a very functional building has rhythm and style. Canopies provide depth and texture - as well as much-needed shade - and glass panels above each door create multi-coloured illumination at night.
