  • Royal HaskoningDHV delivered master planning, FEED design of all M&E works, construction supervision and design verification of the Contractor’s design.

  • Container Terminal 4 is under construction and sets the next benchmark with a capacity of 3.1 million TEU.

Operated by DP World, it is the largest seaport in the Middle East and ranks among the top 10 container ports of the world. The port’s container handling capacity has grown from 18 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) to 22.4 million TEU.

The challenge

Jebel Ali had three successful container terminals, but to secure the future of the port in a rapidly growing trade environment, further expansion was needed.
DP World was seeking a robust and thorough master plan, principally for Container Terminal 4, but with a view to mapping out future expansion and meeting future market demands.
The project scope involved planning, designing, constructing, commissioning and equipping terminal infrastructure to accommodate dedicated container handling operations. These required operations included reefer, rubber-tired gantry (RTG), ship-to-shore (STS) and associated utilities and services such as high voltage (HV).

The solution

Container Terminal 4 is an artificial island north of the port’s existing terminals. The project scope required the creation of 6 berths and initially 2200m of quays.

DP World appointed Royal HaskoningDHV as consultant for the overall master planning exercise to facilitate the future development of Container Terminal 4 – as well as eight future terminal developments.

For Terminal 4, outline design and tender documents were prepared by Royal HaskoningDHV while the detailed design of the works was carried out by the successful contractor. Royal HaskoningDHV then acted as a final reviewer of the design on behalf of the client, before supervising the construction works.

The Outcome

As a longstanding Jebel Ali Port partner, Royal HaskoningDHV carried out master planning, FEED design of all M&E works, construction supervision and design verification of the Contractor’s design.

Container Terminal 4 (T4) is now under construction. It sets the next benchmark for the world of trade with capabilities designed to serve the current and future market with a capacity of 3.1 million TEU.
