Our client is a global producer of food ingredients and nutrients. One of its sites in the Netherlands has been in operation for more than 100 years. Inevitably some long-standing equipment is in use alongside modern process lines. The challenge facing our client was that it lacked in-house technical expertise and resources to solve issues arising from these assets. This had consequences for broader modernisation in the factory, particularly in respect of the energy transition.

Flexible framework provides quick access to expertise

When the biomass treatment plant at the site stopped functioning effectively, a solution was needed to ensure operations continued to meet permit guidelines and the license to operate was retained.

Royal HaskoningDHV has a dedicated support service for such issues. Clients can call on our specialist expertise for small-scale engineering projects at short notice using a framework contract. It provides access to whatever is needed – from equipment replacements and upgrades to the services of safety or sustainability consultants and engineering experts for a matter of days or even hours.

Opportunities highlighted start the energy transition

In this case, a quick scan of operations identified a variety of issues to be addressed. “This was invaluable for our client because it showed that problems were not isolated to the treatment plant. What is more, we were able to highlight opportunities for innovations to transform the efficiency and sustainability of activities,” Marco Faber, Project Management and Consultancy at Royal HaskoningDHV, explains.

A quick fix solution restored effective operations across the plant with our experts working directly with the operators on the factory floor. Our client could also address longer term strategic ambitions by drawing on our expertise and insight. “This helps our client make steps towards the energy transition and become more sustainable. It will bring efficiency gains and potential cost savings from recycling waste or saving 20% on energy. In close collaboration with the client, step by step, the modernisation of this factory is being achieved,” Marco adds.
