Developed measurement protocols to provide accurate reports
New system starts in October 2022
Provided guidance in data assessment, evaluation and verification
Protocols were developed in coordination with the Packaging Waste Fund
Practical experience and industry knowledge key to effective protocols
“Protocols need to be practical, easy to interpret and to apply,” explains Erik van Dijk, Senior Consultant in Circular Economy at Royal HaskoningDHV.To achieve this, it’s necessary to have a clear understanding of how the recycling sector is organised and where the financial stakes are. The protocols must relate to the way the market currently functions and identify where exemptions are needed to produce a single verifiable figure.Erik van Dijk

The protocols were developed for and in close coordination with the Packaging Waste Fund. A structured approach drew on our considerable practical experience in drafting protocols for monitoring and sampling audits. Clear explanations in the protocols ensure they are practical and not overly complicated so companies involved in recycling and sorting waste can provide accurate reports on their activities. The new measurement and reporting system started in 2022. By facilitating monitoring, these protocols make it possible to see whether the increasing recycling targets are met or whether additional measures must be taken.
