THE CHALLENGEThe biggest challenge for the Royal HaskoningDHV team was finding the optimum location and design for the new port. As the foreshore of the Cabinda province is shallow, significant capital dredging was going to be required. However, heavy sedimentation in the area had the potential to induce high maintenance dredging requirements.
THE OUTCOMEThe team carried out the feasibility study for the new port, which included surveys, traffic forecasting, preparation of a master plan, preparation of preliminary designs and financial and economic studies. We then advised an optimum solution going forward which took into account the economic needs, cost effectiveness and social and environmental aspects of the new port.
Following the completion of the study, the proposed port is now set to provide a major cargo handling support function for the Angolan offshore oil industry. Cabinda port will in the future serve the growing consumer market and become a catalyst for developing additional industries in the province, diversifying from the oil industry.
