The new TivoliVredenburg is the largest concert hall of The Netherlands and suitable for all musical genres. It is situated in the centre of Utrecht and is built around the former Vredenburg Music Centre that has kept its now renovated symphony hall. The new building includes five halls with a total capacity of 5500 visitors. Royal HaskoningDHV was responsible for acoustic engineering.
- 1000 m2
The great (symphony) hall by architect Herman Hertzberger (1700 visitors) is maintained and four new halls have been added: for pop, jazz , cross-over, and chamber music. Each hall has its own foyer and facilities and can function as an independent music hall with its own specific character.
The building includes several meeting and conference facilities, a grand café, restaurant, jazz café and circa 1000 m2 office space. Loading and unloading activities for all these halls and facilities takes place underground to prevent sound pollution to the surroundings.
Our big challenge proved to be the realization of good acoustics for each individual hall and at the same time high sound insulation between the halls themselves. A pop concert with high sound levels should be possible together with a chamber music performance that requires a very low background level. This demands special solutions regarding sound insulation and vibration isolation.
The prevention of noise pollution was also an important part of the advice because of a nearby residential area.
