Energy transition & efficiency in ports

Smart ports will be greener ports that use cleaner, decarbonized energy sources. Efficiency of operations will also be increasingly important in delivering reduced emissions. For many of our clients the need to transition to more efficient energy sources is also closely tied to a need to achieve improved energy security.

Many ports and shipping lines have invested in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and we believe this will continue to form an important element of the energy transition as technology for zero carbon technologies continue to evolve. We recognise the value of this alternative fuel to clients and have extensive experience in this technical field.

We are also active in supporting our clients to realise their aspirations around other emerging and evolving alternative fuels such as hybrid technology and hydrogen. With extensive experience in delivering projects across the transportation sector, we are sharing our knowledge to support our clients within the maritime field to explore the opportunities available to them. In particular, the use of hydrogen as an alternative/hybrid fuel for ferries, barges and marine plants as well as the potential for ports to act as hydrogen import/export hubs are technical areas in which we are increasingly active.

Royal HaskoningDHV offers industry-leading services related to the implementation of shoreside power/cold ironing, advising port operators and shipping lines on how best to connect ships to the public power grid from the landside during their stay. We recommend the most efficient and effective approach, tailored to the port’s unique operational requirements and its typical vessels. With experience in supporting coastal and inland waterways clients, we have an in depth understanding of the range of challenges that need to be overcome to implement these kinds of changes.

The ports of the future will maximise the potential for generating their own renewable energy, particularly in solar and wind energy.

We help ports navigate the many options available to them, creating simulations to give ports insights into the energy that could potentially be generated over a 25-year period. We also help balance revenues against investment costs and integrate local power generation with access to the grid, as necessary
