About the UP Nereda® WWTP in Quezon City, Philippines

UP Diliman is one of the oldest and largest universities in the Philippines. It is located in Quezon City, which is one of the most populated cities in the country.

The challenge

The University, UP Diliman, needed to expand their wastewater treatment plant on campus to treat an additional 5,000 m³. The limited space on campus made it a challenge. Additionally, as the plant is located in a rainforest area, there was a requirement to improve the effluent quality of the wastewater and meet the new regulations for Class C waters.

The solution 

It was decided to build a new treatment plant which was capable of treating 5000m³/day next to the existing 7000 m³/day. Our licensee partner, WABAG, was awarded the contract with Nereda as the technology of choice. Due to the small physical footprint of Nereda, it was possible to fit it into the scarce space of land available at the campus. In addition, Nereda was chosen due to its excellent effluent quality which could help the university live up to the new regulations.

The outcome

The upgraded treatment plant treats the wastewater of 30,000 people at the UP Diliman campus area. The expansion and upgrade of the treatment plant not only has a positive impact on the surrounding rainforest area, it also improves the livelihood of the people living and studying at the university campus.
